ABOUT AMY
Amy Nakamura is an aspiring journalist from Kapolei, Hawai'i. Growing up on an island, she was also curious about the world outside of her isolated bubble. She gained an interest in journalism in high school, and currently, she is studying at Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. She is pursuing a B.A. in Newspaper and Online Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and in International Relations with a concentration in International Political Economics and the European region at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She also has a minor in Religion. During her sophomore year (Fall 2018), she studied abroad in Strasbourg, France.
She believes that modern journalism is becoming more and more dependent on visual storytelling. She is very passionate about bridging the gap between text and visuals through graphic design. In August 2017, Amy began her collegiate journalism career as a design editor at The Daily Orange, an independent student newspaper at Syracuse University. As a design editor, she put together page designs for print and constructed graphics for online stories and social media. At the same time, she worked to strengthen her reporting skills by writing stories for the paper’s Features section. She later became the Digital Editor, where she managed all social media and special web projects for the paper. She also became the Feature Editor, where she managed the paper's arts and culture section.
Outside of The Daily Orange, Amy has worked as the Design Director and Senior Staff Writer for a student publication, SU Globalists. SU Globalists is a publication centered around culture, identity, and news through an international lens. She has written personal essays and feature stories about Indigenous student experiences and bilingual education. During the summer of 2019, Amy worked for her local NPR station, Hawai'i Public Radio, through the Society of Professional Journalists. She covered local government, breaking news and more.
This past year, Amy was selected as the Dow Jones News Fund Digital Intern for The Wall Street Journal. She will be interning with the Digital Platforms team in the fall. Meanwhile, Amy is back home in Hawai’i for the summer, where she is working again at Hawai'i Public Radio. Amy's resume is attached below.
